K-Mart in Eldersburg is Closing!!!!

Perhaps the greatest news in the history of Eldersburg! K-Mart, located in the quickly deteriorating Carrolltown Center, has announced that it will be closing.

The announcement came as the store was added to the list of K-Mart's and Sears stores that will be closing.

No word from Carrolltown Center owner Black Oack Associates on what will happen. Will this be the catalyst that they need to close the mall and demolish it and replace it with stores and shops that will meet the needs of Southern Carroll County? Or will they fill the void with another 3rd-rate fitness center or a flea market that meets the needs of the residents of Randallstown?

For now, we can all hear the cheers of previously frustrated residents of Southern Carroll County!!! Down with the ghetto K-Mart!!!

I predict we won't get any new businesses, but more "townhouse style" condos like the one's across Ridge Rd.

While I think the Carrolltown shopping center is awful and needs a major overhaul, I think it's pretty crappy to be happy about a bunch of people losing their jobs. I've lived in the area for about 6 years and have only been in the Kmart a handful of times, but I checked it out again this past Friday after hearing about the closing. The shelves were well stocked, the store was clean, and most importantly, the employees were helpful and friendly. I think the whole thing is just a shame.

I lot of people are missing the point. You do not perpetuate something that isn't working for the sake of a few people that will lose their job. Do something for the greater benefit of everyone. A new Carrolltown Center will create new jobs, and I fully expect more jobs than are there currently. The renovation will benefit companies that will help build and furnish the stores. And we might actually get stores where we will be proud to shop!

I like your blog, and agree with a lot of your observations. However, you do tend to toss the word "ghetto" around a lot. It can come off a bit harsh and actually offensive to some. We all know you mean "neglected and run down", There's more tactful way of saying it. Besides, it sounds really immature. I always picture some high school kid "Oh my gawd, that's like soooo ghetto" I'd don't really care for the Kmart or how deteriorated and neglected the area is. But I'm not going to go out saying "Down with Kmart" I simply just avoid the place. Honestly, you're kind of behaving like some liberals when you get all fired up about something like this.

@Kent - I respect your opinion. I'll try to throw around some new words by breaking out the thesaurus tonight.

As far as getting bent out of shape, that's what sensationalism is all about. If I was ambivalent and matter-of-fact about everything, people wouldn't read the blog. If I say something that causes controversy, it generates lots of blog hits and comments. Look how many comments this post generated. I must have hit a nerve!

The mall owners are the ones responsible for allowing the center to deteriorate and for driving out the other tenants. Has anyone seen anything in print that says the mall will be demolished and rebuilt? How about the theatre?
Eldersburg does not need another gym...especially in a falling down space, with a run down parking lot. Kmart is closing this store (and others) because Sears Holding made the business descision to do so. Now with the closing of Kmart, Walmart will lose its' only local competition.

The area could use some more retail shopping like old navy etc.. additional restaurants, activities for families, a movie theater, a target, there are so many options that could provide employment opportunities....
